How to be productive while working from home?
It is funny how we always wanted to stay under the cozy blankets , with the closed drapes commanding a safe haven for us, far away from our offices. And now, when we are getting all we desired but now we desire for those mundane walls of our offices and that squeaky little chair, just because our productivity is taking the fall here. And even if we get through the tough phase of creating a productive atmosphere, we get stuck with a pet which suddenly wants all your attention or a neighbor who is crying a river, listening to breakup songs. So, how do we enhance our productivity while we work from home?
Its ironic that I am saying this but its scientifically proven that starting early and an early breakfast can enhance your productivity. The best way will be to come up with a to-do list every morning so that you have a track of everything you do. I had covered a few apps to help you with this. Here is the link.
A designated place:
Find yourself a comfortable working place (This excludes the couch and the bed), where you can work everyday and get off when your are off the clock. This will keep you concentrated on the task in hand while the distractions are laid off. You can also take solace in public library or a peaceful coffee shop. It is not possible during this pandemic, so for now stick to a place at your home.
Make sure you can avoid using social media while working:
There is a simple solution for this. If the social media platforms are on your bookmarks, remove them. If there is window open on your browser, close it. Only open it when you need it for work. We think we will only see the feed once but a long lost friend texts you and down goes your to-do list.
Save the calls for your breaks:
In the morning, you can gather up the most concentration, so designate that time for just work. When you feel you want to take breaks or you are done with the work, utilize that time for calls. This way you can use your productive hours only for working.
Newton’s law of inertia:
The bizarre but true rule of productivity is that the busier you are, the more you’ll actually do. It’s like Newton’s law of inertia: If you’re in motion, you’ll stay in motion. If you’re at rest, you’ll stay at rest. And busy people are in fast-enough motion that they have the momentum to complete anything that comes across their desk.
Share your goals with your close ones:
Well, this feeling is kind of ineffable but when I want to be committed to gymming, I tell a close one about the goal so I am always aware that I will need to workout because I have told someone. Fortunately or unfortunately, I share this goal to someone who taunts me if I don’t work towards the goal. Adapt this tip on your own discretion because it works for me but it might not work for you.
How can the companies assure productivity of their employees while they work from home?
Upskilling: We learnt about upkilling and its importance in the previous article and its important that companies allot different assignments to employees to make sure that the learning curve keep moving forward. The company can adapt to an online learning platform so that all the employees consume good quality content and adapt those learnings in their work.
Playing games to keep up team work: Peer learning is an aspect that was important in school and also important in your work life. Companies can set out a game that the employees can play in order to blow off the steam and also enhance the team work. I am pretty sure that after this many days of lockdown, you are not alienated from the online bingo and ludo games. You can opt for team building exercises because ludo will just blow off the steam.
Incentivize them: Its hard for companies to encourage all the employees to play the game. So, the companies can offer e-commerce websites gift cards to the ones who play. Other way is to award gift cards to the winners. Companies can keep up a record and set up a cool award with a cool title like “The Game” (if you haven’t watched WWE in your childhood, we can come up with a better title.)
